Candidate Support Committees
An important component for helping elect friendly candidates is to develop support committees consisting of farmers. These committees are a resource of information for the candidate on agriculture issues as well as a list of volunteers who are willing to help with campaign activities such as going door to door with or on behalf of a candidate, working phone banks, helping distribute yard signs, or conducting get out the vote activities.
Candidate support committees are often called something like "Firefighters for Smith" or in the case of agriculture "Farmers for Smith" or whoever the candidate's name is. While these committees are not official entities of Farm Bureau, members are encouraged to work together on their own time and using their own resources to establish support committees for candidates that they personally believe support agriculture and/or are candidates that would like to better understand agricultural issues. In fact, candidate support committees often serve as a sounding board or policy advisory group to candidates on issues so in that sense candidate support committees are one of the most effective tools in developing a relationship with candidates who once in office will shape public policy that affects the agricultural industry based on how their support committee influenced them.
